Gardnerville Basque Picnic – Something for Everyone

A wood chopping competition, an afternoon barbecue and a NABO-sponsored celebration of Basque music will be among the events in the spotlight this weekend at the Gardnerville Basque Picnic.

To see updated details of current Basque events, see Euskal Kazeta’s Calendar of Events.

The day-long festival will be held this Saturday. Typically held on the second Saturday of August, the event attracts hundreds of people each year.

As part of the event, NABO will be sponsoring a Kantari Eguna,” or Day of the Basque Song. The songfest will include a performance by Zpeiz Mukaki, a talented group of musicians and dancers from the Basque province of Lapurdi in southwestern France.

Basque sporting activities are always an exciting part of the Gardnerville picnic. This year will be no exception – among those competing will be award-winning aizkolari Stephanie Braña. The 22-year-old University of Nevada Reno student has made a name for herself chopping logs for her college team and at Basque festivals across the West. To read more about her, see our article: Stephanie Braña, Chopping with the Big Boys.

Set amid the panoramic Carson Valley, Gardnerville is well known for its historic downtown that features great Basque restaurants and interesting antique stores.
