Terryl Asla, Writer
Terryl Asla’s grandparents immigrated to the United States from the Basque Country in the early 20th century and settled in Eastern Oregon. A distant cousin to Miguel de Unamuno, Asla is an author and illustrator. His award-winning writing career spans academia, journalism, and fiction.
In recent years, he has focused on writing Basque myths and fairy tales which introduce non-Basques to elements of Basque culture, folklore, and history.
Asla published this book Zaldi Danced: Zaldik Dantzatu Zuen. Building on Basque mythical elements, Asla and his sibling Merilee Asla Lee have crafted a stunning picture book showing how their ancestors, an indigenous people of Western Europe, may have imagined the world was created.
